February 15, 2012

RCMP have released the name of the skier killed in the avalanche 12 ago on meadow mountain near Kaslo.

50 year-old Ilkka Saarinen of Finland was part of a Selkirk Wilderness Skiing tour group on the mountain, and was going down a run when the slide was triggered.

Two guides on scene dug him out from the fallen snow but were unable to revive him.

None of the nine other skiers in the group were hurt.

Saarinen is the first person to die in Selkirk Wilderness Skiing's 37 years of operating cat-ski tours in our area.
