Celgar Pollution Case: Decision Expected Thursday

February 16, 2012

A decision is expected in the Zellstoff-Celgar pollution case in Castlegar court this morning.

The mill is charged on several counts related to the large spill of a toxic substance known as "weak black liquor" onto the grounds and into the river in November 2008.

A lengthy and highly technical trial wrapped up in December.

The crown contests the company was negligent in not having enough storage capacity for the liquid, especially in light of a long-running problem they had with the their effluent treatment system.

The company denies the charges and disputes the levels of pollution were above their permitted allowances.
