Nelson Council Opposes Pipeline
The province is neutral on the matter but Nelson City Council formally opposes the proposed Enbridge Pipeline from Alberta through BC to Kitimat.
The majority of Council voted in favour of the motion by Councillor Candace Batycki that also endorses the Nelson-based "Kootenay-to-Kitimat" caravan that leaves Nelson on Monday. Batycki feels it's important for Nelson to support the communities involved including those along the proposed pipe route and coastal first nations.
Council opposes the pipeline on environmental grounds. One Councillor, Bob Adams, rejected the move saying the city was effectively opposing private enterprise.
Mayor John Dooley was not at Council as he's away on vacation.
